“A place where the whole world is visible in miniature …”

The transition of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) to the International Transport Forum as well as the choice of a permanent venue will highlight the international importance of transport and mobility. Leipzig is the ideal venue for the International Transport Forum. The city was chosen for its long tradition as a transport hub, its recognised expertise in conference organisation and its vibrant development.

The German writer Lessing described Leipzig as “a place where the whole world is visible in miniature”, and his assessment rings true to this day. With a population of over 500,000, the city is the largest in Saxony and the newly formed German states. Leipzig’s tradition both as a major trade centre in Central Europe and as one of the world’s oldest trade fairs, dates back as far as 1190.

An outstanding transport infrastructure The gateway to Eastern Europe
Leipzig's position as an important transport hub was established as early as 1839, when Germany’s first long-distance railway line opened from Leipzig to Dresden. Since Germany’s reunification, significant investments have been made to modernise the region’s road and railway systems, and today Leipzig boasts an outstanding transport infrastructure. The city stands at the intersection of the A9 and A14 motorways, and the Leipzig-Halle international airport was recently modernised. Leipzig already has one of the largest cargo freight hubs in Germany, and with its strategic location as a gateway to Eastern Europe, the city looks set to become one of Europe’s foremost logistics sites.
