IRTAD-LAC MoU Signing
New Secretary-General takes office
José Viegas of Portugal took office as the new Secretary-General of the International Transport Forum on 13 August. Viegas had been elected by ministers from Forum member countries at their Summit in May. As a professor of civil engineering at the University of Lisbon and chairman of TIS.pt, a transport consultancy firm, Viegas has worked in all transport modes and managed collaborative networks across countries and economic sectors to advance better solutions in transport.

"I will work hard to provide engaging and successful leadership," Viegas said upon taking up his duties. "There are new and significant challenges for all transport modes across the world. The knowledge production at the Forum and the policy discussions among ministers are very much relevant to address these."

Forum activities
- Secretary-General José Viegas and Head of Research Stephen Perkins met with Brazilian Transport Minister Paulo Sergio Passos in Brasilia in July to discuss areas of interest in the Forum's work for the world's 7th largest economy.

- The Forum renewed its ties as an observer organisation with the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC). At the meeting of APEC's Transportation Working Group in St. Petersburg, Russia, in July, the Forum was able to provide input from member countries' ministers' discussions at the Forum's 2012 Summit in May in Leipzig, Germany.

Key findings on the framework for reporting, assessing and conducting research on road safety countermeasures were widely supported by international road safety experts.

- As part of the Road Safety Training Programme of the African Development Bank, Forum expert Véronique Feypell presented insights from the work of the Forum's International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group (IRTAD) on the importance of road safety data for assessing road safety issues and designing policies to address these.
