Global Summit of Transport Ministers 21-23 May |
Transport Ministers from around the world will meet in Leipzig, Germany
next week for
the ITF Annual Summit on the theme "Transport for a Changing World".
- Keynote Day 1: James K Galbraith, a leading authority
on economic inequality from the University of Texas, will deliver a keynote
address at the
Transport for a Changing World Opening Plenary on 21 May;
-
Keynote Day 2: Paul Romer, from
the Stern School of Business at New York University, whose work focuses on meeting the challenges from massive urbanisation, delivers a keynote
address at the
Creating Liveable Cities session on 22 May;
- Keynote Day
3: Bertrand
Piccard, initiator and pilot of Solar Impulse, the project to
fly a solar-powered aircraft around the world, will deliver a keynote
address at the
Sustainable Transport for All session on 23 May.
Among the
innovations in the 2014 programme is the new ITF Masterclass on
Designing Cities for People, including speakers Francesc Aragall from the Design for All
Foundation, and Helle Søholt of Gehl Architects, on 21 May.

New ITF Report Reviews Global Experience in
Airport Expansion |
|
|
|
The latest ITF report "Expanding Airport Capacity in Large Urban Areas"
reviews international experience in reconciling planning and
environmental constraints with demand for airport capacity and the
potential benefits in terms of productivity and growth from developing
international airline services. Experience is compared in London, New
York, Tokyo, Osaka, Sydney and in Germany's main airports with particular attention to the dynamics of airline markets and implications for airport planning in multi-airport cities.

Global Freight Data Highlight Continuous Dependency on Asia-led Growth |

The latest
Statistics Brief, updating global freight data collected by the ITF
through December 2013, reinforces Asia's role as the locomotive of growth: - USA and EU27 external trade, measured in tonnes of goods moved, remains stagnant;
- Dependency on Asia, especially China, for global growth intensifies; - Brazil's external trade by air, considered as a lead indicator, declines to below pre-crisis levels; - Inland freight remains weak in the EU area, the USA and the Russian Federation.

ITF's
Corporate Partnership Board (CPB) welcomes Uber,
founded in San Francisco in 2008. Uber creates mobile
apps to connect car
passengers with drivers in over 70 cities. The next CPB meeting takes place
on 22 May during ITF's Annual Summit in Leipzig, Germany.
ITF Secretary-General José Viegas met with French Secretary of
State for Transport, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Frédéric Cuvillier
to prepare the Ministerial Session of the Annual Summit under
the Presidency of France during the Transport Research Arena (TRA) on 14
April in Paris.
Secretary-General Viegas and ITF Head of Policy and Summit Preparation
Mary Crass met with the German Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure,
Alexander Dobrindt in Berlin, Germany on 6 May to finalise preparations for the ITF Annual
Summit.

Journalists from some of Germany's top media outlets including BILD
Zeitung, Germany's biggest mass-circulation daily, and ARD, the national
television chain, were introduced to aspects of the "Transport for a
Changing World" theme by ITF Secretary-General José Viegas during the
annual ITF Media Lunch in Berlin on 5 May. The Germany Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure
(BMVI) was represented by Parliamentary State Secretary Dorothee Bär.

ITF Head of Research
Stephen Perkins moderated the discussion on International
Agreements: Building for the Future at the International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO) Air Transport Symposium in Montreal, Canada on 7 May.
Around 20 international logistics and supply chain experts met to
discuss decarbonising logistics. ITF Economist and
Manager of the Statistics Unit Jari Kauppila chaired a session on the
government's role in reducing carbon emissions in the logistics sector at
Kühne Logistics University in Hamburg, Germany on 5 May.
ITF Economist Philippe Crist will attend a World Economic Forum (WEF)
workshop on autonomous vehicles on 20 May, key outcomes from which will
be brought to the ITF Summit session on
Adapting the Vehicle to a New Society,
on 21 May. WEF launches its
Connected World report during the Summit also on 21 May.
ITF is very pleased to welcome new staff member
Mael Martinie, who joins the ITF Research Centre's Transport
Outlook team. Previously Mael was part of the transportation team at
GIZ, the German International Cooperation Agency, working on projects
including Mexican Transport Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions
(NAMAs).
