Advisory Group on Drugs in Traffic
Objective of the Project
The objective of this project was to provide an overview of the prevalence of driving under the influence of drugs in member countries and practice to combat it. It took into account the development of the EC DRUID (1) project and focused on collecting information that is complementary of the information collected in the framework of this project. A strong focus on the project was on non EU countries.
(1) DRUID (Driving under the Influence of Drugs, Alcohol and Medicines) is a major EC Project which aims at providing scientific support to the EU transport policy to reach the 2010 road safety target by establishing guidelines and measures to combat impaired driving.
Participating Countries
The Advisory Group was chaired by Mr. Horst SCHULZE (BASt, Germany).
The following countries nominated an expert to the advisory group: Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the United States.
The final report of the project "Drugs and Driving: Detection and Deterents" and was published in 2010. The report provides a state-of-the-art review of the role and impact of drugs in road accident risk. It reviews the legislation, deterrence and roadside detection practices in member countries as well as preventative measuresto combat drug use while driving. It provides recommendations on strategies to adopt in addressing this issue, with a view to contributing to a safe system approach and saving further lives on the roads.
