Quarterly Transport Statistics

The International Transport Forum carries out a quarterly exercise collecting data on the short term evolution of the transport sector in the 54 member countries so as to foresee trends shifts in the sector as a result of economic down or upturn. The data covers 3 modes of inland transport (rail, road and inland waterways) together with some economic indicators. Series are available since 1995 and they are published with a 3 month lag.

The ITF has begun compiling monthly data on international air and sea cargo volumes, to complement its existing database on road and rail freight volumes. The Quarterly Briefing draws from these data to see how global freight flows have fared since the economic crisis of 2008.

National data are seasonally adjusted by the Joint Transport Research Centre of the OECD and the International Transport Forum Secretariat with the Demetra programme using the TRAMO/SEATS method.

Quarterly data is also used to produce a first look at the annual development of the transport sector. Key Transport Statistics leaflet is available in May each year.
