Short-Term Trends Survey - Introduction

The International Transport Forum carries out on a quarterly basis a survey to collect monthly and quarterly data for three transport modes (rail, road and inland waterways) and some economical variables.   Data are shown with a lag of 3 months (i.e.  Data for the first quarter are available at the end of June). The survey covers all European member countries and it should be extended to the non-European member states.

Individual country data are available in PDF format. For all 3 transport modes, information will be found on carried tonne-km. The rail sector also contains data on carried passenger-km.  For the road sector, data on number of vehicles (first registrations of brand new road vehicles), vehicle-km, motor fuel deliveries and road fatalities are available.  The survey also includes more general economical data such as imports and exports at current prices as well as indices of industrial production.

On the basis of the collected data, two series of graphs have been created.  The first one presents country trends for the different indicators.  The second one allows a comparison between the trends in each country with three geographical regions, i.e. the Long Standing ECMT Member Countries (LSMC) and the New ECMT Member Countries (NMC) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

LSMC include: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom.

NMC include: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, FYR Macedonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia and Slovenia.

CIS include: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.

These data are updated on a quarterly basis.
